Hailing from the eastern U.S., the quite deadly old-school trio HORRENDOUS has just dropped their debut full-length from Dark Descent Records: The Chills! As far as this band goes, it’s all in the name. HORRENDOUS unleashes sheer terror with ice cold leads and violent drumming, all immersed in a frigid landscape created by echoing vocals and an ominous production. The first thing you will notice upon hearing this album is how well-written it is. Melodies, blast beats, and crushing slow sections are placed very well throughout this album. While their sound can be compared to bands like ASPHYX and DISMEMBER, HORRENDOUS is not a clone-band by any stretch of the imagination. Many bands fail to provide a palate of variety as effortlessly as HORRENDOUS, which sets the band far ahead of numerous metal groups. The fourth track, “The Somber (Desolate Winds)”, is one of the most powerful songs I’ve heard in a while. The only problem I have with this album is that it’s too damn short! If The Chills are any sort of barometer of 2012, there will be much to look forward to this year. (Adam Gambel)
