AKARUSA YAMI, the Nottingham, UK-based extreme metal kooks with the weird name play a mish-mash of styles displaying aggressive vocals, blast beats, polyrhythms, staccato rhythms and chugging, mechanical riffs with odd melodies. Comparisons to SIKTH, MESHUGGAH, ANAAL NATHRAKH and FEAR FACTORY would not be off-base. Their 6-track EP Ouroboros is ferocious and brutal at times, yet repetitive and predictable at others. That’s not to say the band can’t play, they can pummel you into submission like the best of ‘em. What they offer is some good, bludgeoning death metal, combined with some progressive patterns and mixed with a calculated brutality. It’s a mighty fine slamming EP. (Kelley Simms)
