As with most of Strike First’s bands, ARK OF THE COVENANT show a lot of potential without necessarily unleashing it completely during their debut record. Vocally, a lot of range is shown, despite some of it being unnecessary. By this, I refer to the pig squeals and deep growls that pop up from time to time. For a band labeled as “hardcore”, ARK OF THE COVENANT more closely resemble death metal a majority of the time. Sure, they got that two-step beat thing, but their overall “appearance” is much darker and heavier than this genre. During the course of this five track EP, the band do manage to show a well rounded view of themselves (something a lot of bands fail to do even a couple records into their career). However, this small collection lasts less than fifteen minutes long. As a result, the experience is short lived and leaves the listener unsure of the impact Separation really left. The track “Locusts Look Like Horses” is probably the stand out track of the EP; its gang vocals and brutal writing styles are unmatched by the rest of the songs. Still, the band do end on a light note that is also rather interesting and note worthy. “Separated” is a very atmospheric closer that features some well sung lines, proving that these guys can do clean vocals when they want to. Ultimately, you’re left with a band that shows a lot of style to what they’re doing, suggesting that their full length could either be an explosive, dominating release, or a complete letdown for not living up to the expectations this EP has now placed. Let’s hope ARK OF THE COVENANT really blow us away when the LP hits shelves. (Nathaniel Lay)
